Harrisburg State Hospital
LOCATED: Harrisburg, PA
Once a beacon of hope for mental health care, the Pennsylvania State Hospital in Harrisburg opened in 1851 with a mission of compassion and healing. Its grand halls and historic buildings now sit in silence, weathered by time and long-abandoned since its closure in 2006. What remains is a haunting testament to shifting tides in mental health treatment—and a compelling destination for those drawn to forgotten places. As of 2025, the hospital is undergoing construction and demolition; it is unlawful to step onto the campus.
